Ugarte suffers cruciate ligament rupture as Uruguay's World Cup unravels

Ugarte tears knee ligament against Spain, World Cup over

Manuel Ugarte is done. The Uruguay and Manchester United midfielder suffered a cruciate knee ligament rupture during Friday's World Cup group-stage match against Spain, his tournament over (1) (2) (5). Manchester United confirmed the injury and said assessment is ongoing "to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale" (1). The club added: "Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way."

This is as bad as it gets. The BBC called it "the most serious injury a footballer can face" (5). Ugarte had been one of the few bright spots in a stuttering Uruguay campaign, impressing fans in the 2–2 draw with Cape Verde that left Bielsa's side second in Group H. Now he misses the final group match against Spain, and the rest of the tournament even if Uruguay advance.

For Manchester United, the timeline is brutal. A cruciate rupture typically means six to nine months out. Ugarte was central to the midfield rebuild. That project now has a hole in it.

Bielsa's farewell already in the air

The Ugarte news lands on top of a campaign already wobbling. Uruguay drew 0–0 with Spain and then 2–2 with Cape Verde in a match overshadowed by a fair-play controversy, a Uruguay player broke off from helping an opponent with cramp to launch the attack that produced the equaliser. Cape Verde's coach was furious. Bielsa publicly took responsibility for the tactical errors in that draw.

Argentina have already topped their group. A last-32 meeting with the reigning champions looms if Uruguay's form does not improve against Spain. And now they face that match without their best defensive midfielder.

Fan reactions

Fans are bracing for the end of an era. A widely shared post on r/soccer captures the mood around Bielsa: "I'm leaving very sad because they left me alone." Whether he meant his players or the federation, the quote is being read as a farewell. Read the thread here.
